The main character in the Book of Doors is a young woman named Cassie. She shares an apartment with her friend Izzy who had aspirations to become an actress, but works as a waitress. Cassie works in a bookshop in New York. It is one of those types of places that has a coffee bar and some strategically placed chairs for people to sit and read. One evening she stops and chats with one of her favorite customers, the elderly Mr Webber and they discuss books, but later she finds that he died. After the ambulance left Cassie notices that Mr Webber left a book on the table next to where he was sitting and there is a note inside that he left it for her. The book is titled, the Book of Doors, and it a magical book that lets the owner travel through space and time.
It turns out there are other magical books and there are magic book collectors, some who just want to collect, but others who use the books for good, or for not so good purposes. Cassie and Izzy stumble into this world where the rules of reality are different and they have to choose what path they will take. There are friends and villains and deadly danger. We are not sure if or how Cassie and her friends will be able to navigate the challenges they face.
I very much enjoyed the Book of Doors. In fact, it is one of my favorites and the best book I’ve read for a long time. I liked the characters … and disliked the bad ones. With book powers, time and place travel, the story was a bit of a mind bender, but I was very impressed with the way Cassie (and the story) wrapped things up in the end. I listened to the audio version and the narrator did an excellent job. It was an enjoyable story and I’d recommend it to book fantasy lovers.
