Dirt Creek is a mystery by Hayley Scrivenor about the disappearance of 12 year old Ester. Shortly after she goes missing Detective Sergeant Sarah Michaels and her partner are sent to Durton, nick-named by the locals as Dirt Town. The police are focusing on pretty much all of the men in the town and it turns out that many of the residents of Durton have secrets. As the investigation and search continue the secrets unravel.
The story is told from the point of view of several of the characters involved, with each chapter the voice switches between Ester’s mother, the detective Sarah Michaels, one of the boys at school, and Ester’s best friend Ronnie. Absolutely my favorite narrator was Ronnie, who had such a rich and interesting way of looking at her life, her friend, and her home town. Ronnie was determined to find her best friend Ester.
It was the stories and descriptions from the characters which drew me in. The story unfolds in layers and was well written. I listened to the audio version and the reader was also very good. The ending was a bit anti-climatic, but seemed real. This is the Hayley Scrivenor’s first book and I would definitely watch for her next release.
